Amy Jackson- Fictional and Real Worlds
Earlier this year I went to see the movie Avatar. Much like the rest of the world, I enjoyed it. In this film, a group of scientists and military people go to the planet, Pandora, to retrieve resources that are of great worth on earth. On Pandora there is a tribe called the Nav'i. Jake Sulley, the main character, becomes one of the Navi through an avatar and he learns their culture, language and skills. After seeing the film I came out desiring to be on Pandora. I wanted to run on the trees and fly on huge dragon-like creatures. This feeling was similar to one I had after reading The Chronicles of Narnia. Much like the Pevensies, I thought Narnia seemed much more exciting and adventurous than my life. I thought to myself, is it bad to desire a different world? It is bad to think that God didn't do as great of a job as the director of Avatar, James Cameron did? I realized that everything in those worlds echoed this world. The nature, the people, the relationship, they all were copies of what we have here. The great sacrifice Aslan made for Edmund is the same one Jesus made for me. Instead of desiring to be in a different place, I realized the great adventures and beauty we have in this life and how much greater they will be in the life to come.
