Art vs. Practicality - Hannah Grimes

“That is one of the functions of art: to present what the narrow and desperately practical perspectives of real life exclude.” (C.S. Lewis, On Stories, p. 10)

I’ve always appreciated the ways artists look at life, but I am usually impossibly planted in practicality. Studying C.S. Lewis and myth during this course has helped me realize my lack of imagination and appreciation for possibilities. I’ve always thought my practical and organized approach to life is what keeps me on task and grounded in reality, but reading Lewis this semester has challenged me to be willing to get outside the comfort of structure and begin to think more creatively.

I’m still no artist…that may take a while. But I do know that I don’t want to look at life with “narrow and desperately practical perspectives” – the world already has enough of that.
