Danyelle Catoe- Dear Orual…You Suck.

Dear Orual-

I received your complaint about Psyche. While I understand your point, there are a few things I would like to discuss with you.
Allow me to introduce myself first. My name is Agepa. I grew up as a young girl in Italy. My family was not very wealthy, but we were very favored in our city. I came to be a goddess much like your sister, Psyche, did. However, my family, unlike hers, was very diligent to serving the gods, so it was a high honor for me to be chosen as the sacrifice. My parents still had difficulty giving up their only daughter, but our community surrounded them with support…which is why I have been permitted to speak with you.
I can relate very well to your situation. I was able to watch my parents as they were forced to cope with the loss of their only daughter. It was indeed heart wrenching, and it was difficult for me to see why the gods would force them to undergo such devastation. When I heard that your sister was to be sacrificed in the same way that I was, I immediately began to watch over you. I was able to see the same devastation in you that was present in my family; but there was something else. My parent’s were grounded in their faith in the gods. Though they were unable to understand their demands, and my parents trusted their wisdom.
You, however, reacted quite differently. You did not ever think of anyone but yourself. You claimed to be concerned about Psyche, but you only really cared because you would miss her. Even when you found out that Psyche was alive, you were distraught because she had not remained how you wanted her to. Your motivations never reached beyond your own perspective. You claimed to love her, but then you used her affection for you to manipulate her into losing the one person who truly loved her. Cupid and Psyche could have had a very successful marriage and survived together very happily. But you forced her to disobey his request to remain anonymous; you twisted her affection for you to pressure her in to obeying your wishes.
You did not seek to understand Psyche’s desire to remain on the mountain. You claimed to love her and desire the best for her. Isn’t her happiness important? Do her emotions and mental well-being mean nothing? You claim to love her, but you know nothing about love. You only know selfishness.
That is why we had to take Psyche away from you. The gods wanted to teach you to learn to think of someone other than yourself. Once Psyche was removed from you and you saw her bliss in marriage, then saw it taken away from her, you were consumed with guilt. You constantly searched for Psyche. You learned to think of others. Though this is a lesson that one must learn through our their lives, the gods were forced to teach you. Yes, the circumstances were indeed harsh, but they were necessary.
However, you have suffered greatly from this harsh lesson. The gods were not in the wrong to teach you; you always benefit from the lessons doled out from them. You must learn to trust them. But, it seems that you have learned your lesson. Therefore, the gods will not punish you further. You have endured the loss of Psyche with increasing patience and endurance. Now that you know the story behind Psyche’s journey and banishment from her palace, you will now know to trust the gods more than you previously did. Therefore, since you have learned your lesson, we trust that it is not one that the gods will have to repeat with such harsh circumstances again. However, your complaint raises some concerns among the gods. We will give you another chance to alter your attitude towards us, now that you have had time to reflect.
Dear Orual, please do not test their patience in this. Reflect on the situation from a fresh perspective, and review your current stance. The gods are willing to show mercy for now, but I can only intercede for you for so long. You must respond to the truth of the situation that the gods have shown you. They have extended you the courtesy of supplying you with a sort of explanation for what happened to Psyche. You now know the full story. Therefore, relent in your anger and bitterness. Do not be self-righteous, but instead trust in the gods.
