In Lewis’s Space Trilogy we come in contact with little critters who cannot be seen and are stealth. They can only be seen if they want to be seen and if one is looking at them in the right light. These eldil are little helpers of sorts who are wise of the ways of the world, yet know so much beyond it.
Creature such as these that Lewis creates remind me of the usefulness of angels. They are said to come in all different shapes and sizes and we cannot always see them like we cannot see God. I think we like to think those who have passed are a special kind of angel, especially if they were “holy” in their life on earth. They are the people who watch over us so we do not feel alone and they are the little pieces of advice that we need to get from point A to point B.
The eldil seem to serve the same purpose, but Lewis lets them be seen if one learns how to look for them. Wouldn’t it be neat if we would be able to recognize the holy and the pure? I mean, maybe we can, but we must learn to look for God in the simple, in the true, in the lowly. I think the eldil have a deeper meaning as Lewis introduces them in Ransom’s quest for knowledge, but they are also a type on information that would ne invaluable here on Earth.
