Outside reading, Mediated Reality-Melissa Faller

Today I read a Michael V. Fox quote he stated "For now, however, the world exhibits a certain stability. The first disturbance to the stasis does not seem threatening; it is a phony crisis of little consequence. But in fact it exposes the seed of danger. It reveals a society easily de-stabalized. It shows that beneath the jovial and trivial surface resides some dangerously tender egos." This quote made me think of all the things we as a society do in order to with hold an illusion that we have everything together. We as a part of society have a role to maintain society. It got me thinking of all the things that we do in order keep our lives looking as Michael V. Fox put it "jovial". Often times we get caught up in the everyday happenings of this world and we forget to take a breath and think and determine the truth. James Carey offers an idea of ritual communication. This ritual model shows that meaning can be constituted in repeated media events (across times, in one space). This means that humans create meaning out of repeated events. Example of this can be seen in media we believe that what happens in the movies should happen in real life. We get a false sense of reality because of the influence media has on us. I feel that C.S. Lewis emphasizes this concept specifically in his Space Trilogy. He often implies that we as humans are moving way too fast. We do not stop to reflect and decipher the truth from what society is telling us is true.
