Shadowlands- Elissa Wilcox

Shadowlands is about Lewis’ life. It was interesting to see the depiction of his relationship with Joy Gresham and the way that it changed throughout the film. In the beginning it was a casual correspondence between a woman and a writer that her son adored. As the film progressed that woman became someone struggling in her marriage and fighting for freedom and respect. Her son was the innocent bystander who did not understand the importance of the trip to Europe. Lewis and she developed a strong friendship that was based on mutual respect and brotherly love. Finally they reached the point where Joy was comfortable asking Lewis to marry her legally so as to be able to stay in England. He agreed and everything went on as usual for a while. However, after Joy became sick and was diagnosed with cancer everything changed. Lewis realized that she had become one his closest friends and that he did not want to lose her so they began to grow close. Finally they turn their civil marriage into a marriage before God and have a few years together before she dies. This was a very moving film and showed the importance of being with someone you truly love.
