“Aslan,” said Lucy, “you’re bigger.”
“That is because you are older, little one,” answered he.
“Not because you are?”
“I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”
(Prince Caspian, p. 380)
This was one of my favorite parts of Prince Caspian, when Lucy finally meets Aslan again. As soon as I read it I was struck by the profound truth Lewis touched on in this passage, because it really expresses my own spiritual journey. It seems as soon as I think I start to understand who God is, I realize just how much more there is to know. As soon as I begin to see one aspect of Him in a more vivid way, I see that I have only begun to wade into the depth of His greatness. What Lewis is talking about in this passage is not that God becomes any greater over time, but that the more we mature and increase in our understanding of Him, we recognize more and more of His holiness. I love Lewis’ ability to articulate ideas in such a simple way – his brilliance kept sneaking up on me and then blowing me away all semester!
