My Choice- Doug Savarie
In the book of 1 Corinthians, Paul discusses the issue of divisions within the church. He says that they are wrong and should not exist because Christ is not divided (1:13). He emphasizes that he (Paul) was not crucified, and that none of them were baptized into the name of Paul, but rather the name of Christ. Now, one can look at this passage and think of it in terms of the divisions that we know now in the Christian church (i.e. different denominations), but when I read this, I think of the divisions between the ministries that exist on our campus here at CNU. The three primary ones that come to mind are Inter-Varsity, Young Life, and CRU. Looking at the Christian community here, often times there seems to be a rivalry among these groups, and I do not think that it should be this way. Granted, since my freshman year, many things have been done, successfully I might add, to break down some of these barriers. However, there is still much work to be done. I see these rivalries that exist, but I do not understand them. Yes they are all three Christian ministries, and yes all three of them draw their leaders from the CNU student body, but all three of them serve completely different purposes. Young Life reaches out to high school age kids in the local schools; Inter-Varsity is a ministry focused on developing the faith of students and faculty at CNU; and CRU focuses on campus evangelism. I think that these ministries should complement each other; moreover, I think that the best thing that can be done by people involved with all three, is to encourage and support the brothers and sisters that are involved with the other ministries.
