Kelsey Garegnani - landscape and the space trilogy
One of my favorite things about the space trilogy is the landscape. In Narnia the landscape was still similar to real life, but in Out of the Silent Planet its all completely made up. Iv always wanted to experience what it would be like if things were different colors and having such an interesting landscape really added to out of world experience of the book. By having such an unusual landscape, it expand my imagination while reading and completely change my perspective on my expectations. A lot of our actions and attitudes are socially constructed and triggered by our familiar surroundings. Because of this, I felt that having an unusual landscape set the stage in a way that allows the reader to drop their preconceived expectations. They can they experience the book for fully and notice things they might have overlooked before, or be more accepting of ideas that they might have earlier disregarded. This openness to what is new is similar to how I feel people become when traveling. In the same way the new cultures and people allow them to drop their own social norms and created rules and open their mind to learn and experience new things.
