Shadowlands- Emily Williamson

Last week, we watched Shadowlands in class. Shadowlands is a film about the life of C.S. Lewis, with great focus on the relationship with his wife. This film portrays the love that Joy Gresham and C.S. Lewis have for each other, but it also exemplifies the grief and suffering they experience when Joy is diagnosed with bone cancer. Joy eventually dies from the bone cancer, leaving behind her son and her husband.

Throughout the movie, we see Lewis speaking about suffering at a church. A reoccurring line in the movie is "God doesn't necessarily want us to be happy, He wants us to love and be loved." By this statement, C.S. Lewis implies that our lives are not meant for our own happiness, but for something greater. He states that God wants us to be loved. To this he means being loved by God and loved romantically by someone else. Lewis held both of these loves and they reflected greatly in his life.

Another important quote from the movie was "The most intensive joy is not in the having but in the desire." To this, Lewis is speaking about being in love. To Lewis, the desire for love is much more intense than actually having it.
