Tavel vs. Tourism- Elissa Wilcox
Lewis had some very strong opinions about the correct way to travel. He believed that although "seeing the sights" was important, that did not qualify as true travel. True travel was when someone was completely immersed in a culture other than their own and shown how to live the way the people of the land lived. Tourism on the other hand is the action of visiting, of seeing the parts that are beautiful or have some historical significance instead of getting to see the life that people really live there. The only true way to travel involves getting to know people and places intimately so that lasting memories are made. Although it is not always possible to commit to true travel, we should try to do it as much as possible. In my mind, the tourist is there for the quick experience, and the traveler is there to learn and be impacted in the long run by their journeys. I also think that it involves and element of learning, which is different from just seeing.
